Product labels carry your brand and legally required information on every item you sell. Whether you make hot sauce, soap, candles, or baked goods, well-designed labels build trust and keep you compliant with labeling rules in your category.

What Every Product Label Needs

  • Product name and brand identity
  • Net weight or volume
  • Ingredient list (food and cosmetics)
  • Allergen warnings where applicable
  • Your business name and contact information
  • Batch or best-by date if required for your product type

Regulations vary by product and jurisdiction. Research FDA food labeling, cosmetic labeling, and CPSC requirements before printing your first run.

Choose the Right Label Material

Refrigerated, oily, or wet products need UV-laminated vinyl labels that resist moisture and smudging. Dry indoor goods like candles and bath salts can use paper or unlaminated vinyl for a craft aesthetic. Clear vinyl labels create a printed-on-glass look for jars and bottles.

Size, Layout, and Ordering

Measure your container flat and subtract 1/4 inch from width for a clean wrap. Common sizes are 2" × 3" for small jars and 2.5" × 4" for standard bottles. Keep fonts readable — minimum 7–8 pt for ingredients.

Batch Numbers and Compliance

If regulations require lot or batch tracking, leave space on your label template for handwriting or a stamp at packing time. Some makers print a blank line or small box for "Batch #" and fill it in per production run. This is common in soap, skincare, and food products where traceability matters.
